**Shimla, January 2, 2025** – The Himachal Pradesh government announced plans to allocate 22 new hydropower projects totaling 828 MW capacity. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu revealed that these projects, ranging from 6.5 MW to 400 MW, will be located across five districts: Kullu, Chamba, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, and Shimla.

The largest allocation, comprising nine projects with a combined capacity of 595 MW, is earmarked for the Chenab river basin. The Sutlej basin will receive eight projects (169 MW), the Ravi basin four (55 MW), and the Beas basin one (9 MW).

Significantly, this is the first time Himachal Pradesh will offer these projects to entities outside the state, including other states, union territories, and central and state undertakings. The projects will be leased for 40 years, with a ₹10 lakh per megawatt upfront premium. The Energy Directorate has already contacted relevant secretaries to initiate the process.

CM Sukhu emphasized that this initiative aims to secure the state’s power supply, generate revenue through free electricity, and create employment opportunities. He further stated that the projects will stimulate development in surrounding areas and contribute to Himachal Pradesh’s economic prosperity.
