Thu Jan 02 07:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Jamaica Imports Ice After Major Ice Plant Fire

**Kingston, Jamaica** – Jamaica is temporarily importing ice following a devastating fire at Pure National Limited, the island’s main ice producer. The Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce announced the measure on Monday, stating that the fire caused 90% infrastructure damage to the facility. While Pure National aims to resume full production by mid-2025, imported ice will bridge the supply gap for the next six months, ensuring availability for the upcoming festive season and vital sectors like food and beverage, and tourism.

To mitigate potential price hikes, the Ministry has tasked the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) with closely monitoring ice prices and ensuring fair treatment for consumers. Furthermore, the Ministry has applied to the CARICOM Secretariat for a suspension of the common external tariff (CET) on imported ice, aiming to reduce costs and maintain competitive pricing. A decision is expected in January 2025.

Retailers have been urged to maintain fair pricing, and consumers are encouraged to report any instances of price gouging to the CAC, providing supporting documentation. The Ministry emphasized its commitment to monitoring prices and ensuring the consistent supply of essential goods and services.
