**Jaipur, January 2, 2025** – Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has criticized Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s apology for the state’s ethnic conflict, calling it insufficient and demanding his resignation. Gehlot, speaking to reporters on Wednesday, asserted that Singh should have stepped down for failing to control the violence that claimed over 250 lives and displaced thousands since May 2023.
He further lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their perceived inaction and indifference towards the crisis in Manipur. Gehlot highlighted the Prime Minister’s absence from the state, contrasting it with his appeals to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic. He argued that a timely visit and call for peace from Modi could have potentially mitigated the conflict.
While Singh expressed regret and appealed for forgiveness and reconciliation, Gehlot dismissed the apology as inadequate, given the scale of the violence and the government’s delayed response. He questioned the Centre’s inaction, suggesting a change in Chief Minister could have prevented the escalation of violence.
Gehlot also criticized the Rajasthan government’s recent decision to dissolve nine districts established by the previous Congress administration, arguing that such decisions should prioritize public convenience over cost considerations. He used the example of Jaipur Metro, highlighting that while such projects may be financially challenging, they are crucial for public benefit.
