Thu Jan 02 06:11:39 UTC 2025: ## Madras High Court Judge Condemns Politicization of Anna University Sexual Assault Case

**Chennai, January 2, 2025** – Justice P. Velmurugan of the Madras High Court on Thursday strongly criticized the politicization of the recent sexual assault case at Anna University, stating that instead of introspection, the incident is being used for political gain. The judge expressed his anguish, not as a judge, but as a citizen ashamed by the continued subjugation of women in society.

Justice Velmurugan’s comments followed a mention by a Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) advocate regarding the denial of permission for a protest by the party’s women’s wing. He asserted that such protests are often for media attention rather than genuine concern. He also criticized the media for conducting what he termed a “media trial,” urging responsible reporting.

The judge’s remarks come amidst ongoing investigations into the case, with a special investigation team (SIT) already launched and the National Commission for Women (NCW) criticizing the government’s response. While the Tamil Nadu government has pledged to ensure swift justice, opposition parties have accused the ruling DMK of attempting to shield someone involved.

Justice Velmurugan highlighted the formation of an all-woman IPS officers’ team to investigate, emphasizing that the court will ensure a proper investigation. He stressed that protests are not a solution and that the fundamental issue is the unequal treatment of women in society, urging a change in the mindset that necessitates “protecting” women instead of granting them equal rights.
