**Chennai, India –** The Madras High Court today criticized the politicization of the alleged sexual assault case at Anna University, stating that genuine concerns for women’s safety are being overshadowed. The observation came during a hearing concerning a planned protest by the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) that was denied police permission.
The case involves a 19-year-old engineering student who was allegedly assaulted on December 23rd on campus by Gnanasekaran, a roadside biryani vendor with a prior criminal record. Gnanasekaran was swiftly arrested following the complaint, which detailed a brutal attack on both the victim and her male friend.
In response to public outrage, the High Court ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate. Concurrently, the National Commission for Women (NCW) dispatched a two-member fact-finding committee, including retired IPS officer Praveen Dixit. The committee conducted a two-day investigation, interviewing the victim, her family, university authorities, and NGOs, and assessing campus security. The NCW subsequently announced on X that a detailed report with actionable recommendations has been prepared to ensure accountability.
The High Court’s intervention highlights growing concerns that the incident is being exploited for political gain, diverting attention from the crucial issue of women’s safety on university campuses.
