**Mumbai, January 2, 2025** – Over 183,000 anganwadi workers and helpers in Maharashtra are yet to receive payment for their work implementing the state government’s Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana, a ₹1,500 monthly assistance scheme for women. The workers, responsible for enrolling beneficiaries aged 21-60, were promised ₹50 per application but are facing delays despite completing their work before the November 2024 assembly elections.
The scheme’s launch was marred by technical glitches with the application mobile app, inconsistent internet access, and a lack of specified working hours or daily targets, according to workers. They reported working excessive hours, often from 7 a.m. to midnight, and neglecting their regular duties, including childcare and education at anganwadis. Some workers reported filling over 400 applications daily in urban areas.
Workers across the state, including Sangeeta Kamble (Mumbai), Chhaya Gangadhar Kagdelwar (Gadchiroli), and Kanchan Punjaram Wahule (Jalna), described the grueling workload and the disruption to their personal lives. They highlighted instances of rejected applications due to missing documents from beneficiaries. Furthermore, workers allege they were pressured to mobilize beneficiaries for political rallies, adding to their already heavy workload.
While a Women and Child Development Department official confirmed the availability of funds, disbursement is pending data verification. The official stated that payments will be credited by January, after the department verifies the number of forms completed by each worker. Despite the delays in worker payments, the scheme has successfully disbursed funds to 2.48 crore beneficiaries, with 10 lakh cases pending due to Aadhaar-bank account linking issues. The delayed payments have sparked criticism from worker unions who are demanding immediate action from the Maharashtra government.
