Tue Dec 31 03:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Bengaluru to Deploy 86 Electric Mini-Sweepers to Tackle Dust in Congested Areas

**Bengaluru, December 31, 2024** – The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to deploy 86 small, battery-operated electric sweeping machines to combat dust pollution in the city’s crowded commercial areas. The ₹7.5 crore project, funded by the 15th Finance Commission Grants, aims to address a longstanding issue of inadequate cleaning in narrow lanes and market hubs like Commercial Street, K.R. Market, and Shivajinagar.

Currently, the BBMP utilizes larger mechanical sweepers for arterial roads, but these are unsuitable for navigating congested areas. The new mini-sweepers, with a capacity of less than two cubic meters, are designed for greater maneuverability in confined spaces. They will operate primarily at night, minimizing disruption to businesses.

BBMP officials expressed optimism that the initiative will significantly improve air quality and overall cleanliness. Basavaraj Kabade, chief engineer of BBMP’s Solid Waste Management (SWM) section, highlighted the machines’ efficiency in cleaning densely populated areas and the need for a solution given the aging Pourakarmika (sanitation worker) workforce.

Sarfaraz Khan, an SWM expert, lauded the move, emphasizing the machines’ role in reducing dust and pollution. He advocated for comprehensive monitoring, including GPS tracking and data sharing on a public platform, to ensure effective utilization of the sweepers.

While shopkeepers in areas like Gandhi Bazaar and Commercial Street welcomed the initiative, concerns were raised regarding nighttime parking and the need for clear roadways. Flower vendor Subamma at K.R. Market also suggested daytime cleaning to maximize effectiveness. The BBMP is currently finalizing the specifications and procurement process for the new sweepers.
