Tue Dec 31 07:53:02 UTC 2024: ## Wall Street to Close in Observance of National Day of Mourning for Jimmy Carter
**New York, NY –** In a display of national mourning, US stock markets will be closed on Monday, January 9th, to honor the life and legacy of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29th at the age of 100.
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq, and Cboe Global Markets will all halt trading, following a longstanding tradition of closing markets upon the death of a US president. The bond market will close at 2 p.m. EST, as recommended by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA).
NYSE President Lynn Martin stated that the closure is a respectful tribute to President Carter’s decades of service. The NYSE will also fly the US flag at half-staff during the mourning period.
This marks the 22nd time US markets have closed for the death of a president, a practice dating back to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865. While market closures are rare, the passing of a president has consistently been an exception.
Ed Yardeni, founder of Yardeni Research, explained the closure as a symbolic gesture demonstrating the interdependence of American capitalism and a functioning democracy. He emphasized that the full-day closure is a more significant statement than a mere moment of silence.
Historically, the NYSE has also closed for other significant events, including the deaths of Queen Victoria, John Pierpont Morgan, and Martin Luther King Jr., as well as national emergencies and disasters. Conversely, the exchange has also paused trading for celebratory occasions, such as the centennial of George Washington’s inauguration.
