**WASHINGTON** – The US Treasury Department confirmed a significant cyber breach, revealing that state-sponsored Chinese hackers accessed employee computers through a compromised third-party software provider, BeyondTrust. The breach, discovered on December 8th, allowed the hackers to bypass security measures and access unclassified documents on Treasury employee workstations.
According to a letter sent to senators Sherrod Brown and Tim Scott, Assistant Secretary for Management Aditi Hardikar detailed the incident. The hackers exploited a compromised key belonging to BeyondTrust, a vendor providing remote technical support, to gain access to the Treasury’s systems. BeyondTrust has since taken the compromised service offline.
The Treasury Department, in collaboration with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the FBI, and other intelligence agencies, is conducting a full investigation. While the investigation is ongoing, the Treasury assures the public that there’s no evidence suggesting the hackers maintain access to their systems or that classified information was compromised.
A Treasury spokesperson emphasized the department’s commitment to cybersecurity, highlighting significant investments in its defenses over the past four years. A supplemental report detailing the full extent of the breach is expected within 30 days.
