**NEW YORK, NY** – Rapper Pitbull helped unveil the dazzling new Waterford Crystal New Year’s Eve ball in Times Square on Friday, kicking off the excitement for the upcoming celebrations. The 12-foot-diameter sphere, weighing in at a hefty 11,875 pounds, boasts 2,688 crystal triangles and over 32,000 LED lights.
Despite AccuWeather’s prediction of rain, the festivities are expected to proceed as planned. This year marks the 118th anniversary of the Times Square Ball Drop tradition, which began in 1907, evolving from a simple iron and wood structure to the technologically advanced spectacle seen today.
This year’s celebration will feature a star-studded lineup of performers including Carrie Underwood, the Jonas Brothers, Lenny Kravitz, Mickey Guyton, and many more. Underwood will perform a medley of hits just before the ball drop, followed by Guyton’s rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” The event will begin shortly before 6 p.m. ET on December 31st, with the ball descending at midnight.
Viewers can watch the festivities live on various networks including ABC (Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest), CNN (Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen’s New Year’s Eve Live), and CBS (Nashville’s Big Bash). A live webcast will also be available on Times Square’s official website, featuring commercial-free coverage, backstage access, and interviews. A livestream with open captions and ASL interpretation will be available on YouTube.
The iconic ball drop, accompanied by over a ton of confetti, promises a spectacular end to 2024 and a dazzling start to 2025.
