Mon Dec 30 18:30:18 UTC 2024: ## Thai Influencer Dies After Whisky Drinking Challenge; Man Arrested

**Chanthaburi, Thailand** – A 21-year-old Thai social media influencer, Thanakarn Kanthee, known online as “Bank Leicester,” died on December 25th after consuming two bottles of whisky as part of a paid challenge at a birthday party. Kanthee, who had intellectual disabilities, reportedly accepted a 30,000 Thai baht (approximately $870 USD) offer to drink the alcohol. He had previously engaged in similar dangerous stunts involving hand sanitizer and wasabi for money.

Witnesses report Kanthee quickly consumed the whisky within 20 minutes, subsequently losing consciousness due to alcohol poisoning. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead.

Police have arrested Ekkachart Meephrom, aka “Em Ekkachart,” the man who allegedly arranged the challenge. A raid on Meephrom’s home uncovered a pistol, bank books, and mobile phones, leading investigators to believe he may be linked to gambling activities. Meephrom confessed to his involvement, stating his mother, Supranee Phoonkasi, organized the party. He faces up to 10 years imprisonment and a 20,000 baht fine if convicted of reckless behaviour causing death.

Kanthee’s death has ignited widespread outrage on social media. Videos circulating online show partygoers cheering as Kanthee collapsed, prompting criticism of their lack of intervention. A poignant social media post by Kanthee, which has since gone viral, revealed his motivation for participating in such dangerous challenges: to provide for his family. The post read, “I am willing to be bullied and insulted to just get scraps of money from the rich people in order to provide for my family.” The incident underscores the tragic consequences of exploitative challenges and the vulnerability of individuals driven by financial desperation.
