**Geneva, December 31, 2024** – A Swiss International Air Lines cabin crew member has died following a medical emergency after an emergency landing in Graz, Austria, the airline announced on Monday.
The incident occurred on December 23rd when an Airbus A220-300, en route from Bucharest to Zurich with 74 passengers and five crew, experienced engine problems and smoke filled the cockpit and cabin, forcing an emergency landing. While the plane landed safely, one cabin crew member was critically injured and later died in a Graz hospital. Another crew member was also hospitalized, along with 12 passengers who all received medical attention. Swiss International Air Lines confirmed that all hospitalized passengers have since been discharged.
Swiss CEO Jens Fehlinger expressed profound sorrow and shock, offering condolences to the family of the deceased crew member. The airline stated that out of respect for the family, details regarding the crew member and the cause of death would not be released. Chief Operating Officer Oliver Buchhofer thanked the Austrian emergency services for their response.
Swiss International Air Lines is launching an investigation into the incident, focusing on both the aircraft’s mechanical components, particularly the engine, and the effectiveness of the cabin crew’s breathing equipment.
