Mon Dec 30 11:01:14 UTC 2024: ## MLA Uma Thomas Remains on Ventilator After Stadium Fall
**Kottayam:** MLA Uma Thomas remains in critical but stable condition at RIMS Medical City after a fall from a gallery at Kallur stadium. While doctors report some improvement from her initial state, they state that she is not yet out of danger and will require continued ventilator support.
A CT scan this morning revealed that the head injury sustained in the fall is not as severe as initially feared. However, the medical bulletin highlights significant lung contusions, described as serious by the medical team. Blood from the nose and mouth has pooled in her lungs, necessitating antibiotic treatment to combat infection. Scans of her abdomen showed no further complications.
While her vital signs are stable, the severity of the lung injury means she will remain on the ventilator for several days. Treatment is currently focused on addressing the lung contusions. Doctors also discovered an undisplaced cervical spine fracture, but immediate intervention is not deemed necessary. Further procedures may be considered once her condition improves.
Though her condition is better than when admitted, doctors emphasized that the critical phase has not been passed. Pre-existing heart conditions, including a previously implanted stent, and related medication are believed to have contributed to yesterday’s bleeding. The medical team confirmed that the focus is on improving lung health through antibiotic treatment and that recovery of other injuries will positively impact the head injury. A team of doctors from Kottayam Medical College visited, concurring with the ongoing treatment plan and ruling out the need for surgery. Minister P. Rajeev, after visiting her, also confirmed that her condition has shown improvement since admission.
