**Kanniyakumari, Tamil Nadu –** Despite inclement weather, the inauguration of India’s first sea-spanning glass bridge in Kanniyakumari drew large crowds of tourists on Monday. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, along with several ministers and MPs, officially opened the bridge connecting the Tiruvalluvar Statue and the Vivekananda Rock Memorial.
Tourists from across India expressed delight at the experience, describing the walk across the bridge as “marvellous” and “exciting.” The new attraction is expected to significantly boost tourism in the already popular district, known for its waterfalls and other scenic spots.
Local tour operators are calling for increased publicity of the glass bridge and the Tiruvalluvar Statue to attract more visitors from other states. They suggest the Tourism Department actively promote the new infrastructure.
The inauguration coincided with a “pattimandram” (public forum) celebrating the legacy of Tiruvalluvar, which drew substantial crowds despite the rain. A sand sculpture of the saint poet also attracted many visitors.
While the event was a success, the influx of tourists, including Ayyappa devotees, led to some logistical challenges, including full hotel occupancy and reports of online room bookings being cancelled. Police implemented extensive security measures due to the presence of numerous VVIPs. Chief Minister Stalin is scheduled to participate in further events before departing for Chennai.
