Mon Dec 30 13:14:42 UTC 2024: ## Alluri Sitharama Raju District Sees Drop in Maoist Activity, Rise in Cybercrime
**Paderu, Andhra Pradesh –** The Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district in Andhra Pradesh has witnessed a significant decline in Left Wing Extremism (LWE) activities in 2024, according to Superintendent of Police Amit Bardar. Addressing the annual crime review meeting on Monday, Mr. Bardar reported only one arson case this year, compared to previous years, attributing the success to developmental initiatives and community outreach programs in tribal areas.
The police’s efforts resulted in the arrest of a key Maoist commander, Sodi Baman, and the surrender of 14 cadre members, including several high-ranking officials. Furthermore, 33 militia personnel were bound over, contributing to the weakening of the Maoist network. Two explosive dumps were also recovered.
While LWE activity has decreased, the district saw a 15% overall increase in crime compared to 2023, with 1,859 cases reported. However, there were decreases in bodily offences (11%), property offences (20%), and crimes against women (24%). Recovered property was valued at ₹17.65 lakh.
Conversely, cybercrime cases surged by 64%, rising from 13 in 2023 to 34 in 2024. Ganja-related cases also increased by 15.4%, with 23,366 kg of ganja and 91.2 kg of hash oil seized. The SP highlighted the intensified awareness programs on cybercrime implemented across the district. The police’s community engagement programs, such as Spoorthi, Cheyutha, and Prerana, are credited with fostering a positive outlook towards governance and providing employment opportunities to tribal youth.
