Mon Dec 30 08:51:00 UTC 2024: ## Salem Cracks Down on Stray Cattle with New Fines

**Salem, Tamil Nadu, December 30, 2024** – The Salem Corporation has implemented a new fine system targeting owners of stray cattle causing traffic hazards and public disturbances. The move follows several incidents of cattle attacking people and creating traffic congestion, particularly in market areas.

Under Section 292 of the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies (Amendment) Act, 2023, stray cattle – including cows, buffaloes, goats, horses, and dogs – can be seized. Owners must pay fines to reclaim their animals. Unclaimed animals will be auctioned, with proceeds going to the corporation.

The fine structure is as follows:

* **Cows, Buffaloes, Horses:** ₹2,000 for the first 48 hours, plus ₹500 per day thereafter.
* **Goats:** ₹500 for the first 48 hours, plus ₹100 per day thereafter.
* **Dogs:** ₹250 for the first 48 hours, plus ₹50 per day thereafter.

If animals remain unsold after two auctions, they will be transferred to animal welfare NGOs. The corporation hopes the new fines will deter irresponsible cattle ownership and improve public safety.
