Mon Dec 30 09:21:05 UTC 2024: ## Punjab Shut Down as Farmers Stage Statewide Bandh
**Chandigarh, December 30** – A statewide bandh in Punjab has brought the state to a standstill today, impacting transportation, education, and businesses. The shutdown, called by two farmer unions, the Krantikari Kisan Union and BKU Dakaunda (Dhaner), is in support of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on a 35-day hunger strike demanding the implementation of 13 farm-related demands.
The bandh, which began at 7 am and is expected to last until 4 pm, has seen farmers block highways and railway tracks at numerous locations across the state. Over 232 trains, including Vande Bharat Express services, have been cancelled, and all educational institutions are closed. While emergency services are operating, private and public bus services are largely disrupted due to road blockades at over 200 points. Fruit and vegetable markets are also significantly affected due to trucker participation in the bandh.
Dallewal’s health is reportedly deteriorating, and he continues to refuse medical treatment despite repeated attempts by the Punjab government and a Supreme Court directive to hospitalize him. The Supreme Court has strongly criticized the Aam Aadmi Party-led state government for its inaction and issued a deadline of December 31 for his hospitalization. Talks between the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and a Supreme Court committee are scheduled for January 3rd.
The bandh has caused significant economic disruption, with industry leaders expressing concerns about the impact on Punjab’s economy. While the farmer unions claim exemptions for essential travel, widespread traffic congestion and delays are being reported across the state. The Punjab Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann, is expected to meet with Dallewal today, in a last-ditch effort to persuade him to accept medical care before the Supreme Court deadline. The situation remains tense, with a heavy police presence deployed at various protest sites.
