Mon Dec 30 07:40:24 UTC 2024: ## Punjab Shut Down as Farmers Stage Statewide Bandh

**Chandigarh, India –** A complete shutdown gripped Punjab on December 30th, 2024, as farmers staged a statewide bandh (shutdown) to press their demands on the central government. The protest, organized by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, brought life to a standstill across the state from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Road and rail services were severely disrupted by blockades, impacting commuter traffic significantly. Shops and commercial establishments remained closed, and the supply of milk, fruits, and vegetables was halted. Indian Railways reported the cancellation of 150 trains and rescheduling of 13 others. State bus services were also significantly affected.

The bandh received widespread support from various sectors, including traders, transporters, employee unions, and even some teachers’ unions. Farmers have been protesting at the Punjab-Haryana border since February 13th, demanding a legal guarantee for minimum support prices (MSP) for crops. Their demands also include debt waivers, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, and the withdrawal of police cases related to past protests.

While the bandh was comprehensive, organizers stated that emergency services, such as ambulances and transportation to airports, were exempted. Despite attempts by the Punjab government to persuade a fasting farmer leader to seek medical attention, the protest continued, with farmers maintaining their commitment to their demands. The farmers vowed to continue their agitation until the central government addresses their concerns. The impact of the bandh and the ongoing farmer protests are expected to have significant long-term effects on the state’s economy and agricultural sector.
