Mon Dec 30 11:25:31 UTC 2024: ## Punjab observes Bandh in support of ailing farmer leader

**Chandigarh, December 30:** Punjab is observing a complete shutdown today, December 30th, in a show of support for farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on a 35-day hunger strike. The bandh, called by several farmer organizations including the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and the Sanjukt Kisan Morcha, began at 7:00 AM and will continue until 4:00 PM.

Dallewal’s health is reportedly deteriorating, but he has refused medical treatment despite appeals from the Punjab government. Kisan leader Sarwan Singh Pandher stated that the bandh, while requested, was overwhelmingly supported by the people of Punjab, with businesses voluntarily closing. Pandher emphasized that the shutdown is intended to be peaceful, urging participants to avoid any confrontation.

While the bandh impacts transportation, including the cancellation of approximately 150 trains (including three Vande Bharat Express trains), essential services like medical care, emergency services, weddings, and job interviews are exempt. Government offices remain open, though employee access may be affected by transportation disruptions. Schools are largely unaffected due to existing winter holidays, but some higher education institutions have postponed exams. The impact on the supply of milk, fruits, and vegetables is expected to be significant due to truck driver participation in the bandh.

The situation is being closely monitored, with authorities appealing for calm and peaceful adherence to the bandh. The long-term effects of the shutdown on the state’s economy and transportation remain to be seen.
