**BUFFALO, NY –** The National Weather Service has issued a lakeshore flood warning for Erie and Chautauqua counties, effective until 1 p.m. Monday. Rapidly rising water levels in the eastern end of Lake Erie are expected to cause significant flooding along the shoreline.

Areas particularly at risk include Route 5 in Hamburg, Buffalo Harbor and Canalside, and Dunkirk Harbor, as well as other low-lying areas. The NWS warns of very high wave action leading to significant shoreline erosion.

Residents are urged to stay away from breakwaters, piers, and beaches due to dangerous wave conditions. Road closures and extremely hazardous boating conditions are also anticipated.

The warning emphasizes the dangers of floodwaters, advising residents to move to higher ground in flood-prone areas. The NWS stresses that even seemingly shallow water can be powerfully dangerous and that driving through floodwaters should be avoided at all costs. Anyone trapped by floodwaters should immediately contact emergency services.

This warning follows the NWS’s explanation of different flood alerts, ranging from advisories to watches and warnings, emphasizing the need for preparedness and awareness in flood-prone regions. The service provides safety guidelines including evacuating to higher ground if instructed, disconnecting utilities, and avoiding contact with floodwaters.
