BHOPAL, INDIA – Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have strongly condemned the death of a 35-year-old Dalit man, Mukesh Longre, in police custody at a Satwas police station in Dewas district, Madhya Pradesh. They allege the incident, which occurred on December 28th, points to a larger pattern of oppression against marginalized communities under the BJP government.
Mr. Gandhi, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), linked the death to another incident in Odisha where tribal women were allegedly assaulted, stating that both events were “sad, shameful, and highly condemnable.” He asserted that such incidents are occurring frequently in BJP-ruled states, implying government complicity.
While police claim Mr. Longre was not in custody and died by suicide after being called in to give a statement, his family and the Congress maintain he was murdered after police demanded a bribe. The Dewas Superintendent of Police, Puneet Gahlot, confirmed the suspension of the station in-charge and the initiation of a judicial investigation.
Ms. Vadra echoed these sentiments, alleging that the BJP’s rule is characterized by the “insult of Babasaheb Ambedkar and oppression of weaker sections.” She cited similar incidents in other states, suggesting a widespread pattern of police brutality against Dalits and Adivasis.
Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari met the victim’s family and criticized Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, demanding the suspension of the entire police station staff. He announced a forthcoming Congress event, “Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan,” to address these issues and demand justice for Dalits and Adivasis, including a caste-based census. Senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, are expected to attend.
