Mon Dec 30 14:30:36 UTC 2024: ## Thiruvananthapuram to Ring in the New Year Despite Official Mourning
**THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, December 30, 2024** – While official New Year’s Eve celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram have been cancelled due to a seven-day mourning period following the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the city will still welcome the new year with a range of private events.
The only official event is the ongoing 10-day Vasantholsavam light and flower festival at Kanakakkunnu Palace grounds. However, private sector hospitality groups have organized a variety of celebrations, including a large music and dance extravaganza by the Lulu Group, expected to be a major highlight. Several hotels in Kovalam, Varkala, and Poovar are also hosting New Year’s events, featuring live music, dinners, and smaller fireworks displays.
The Thiruvananthapuram District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) cancelled its planned fireworks and cultural programs in Kovalam out of respect for the mourning period. However, Secretary Satheesh Miranda stated that private events will proceed as scheduled. Mr. Miranda also noted that Kerala’s peak tourist season is underway, with a strong domestic tourism presence, though international tourist numbers, particularly from the UK, are lower than expected due to global uncertainty. He expressed hope for an increase in international tourism in the coming months.
The Vasantholsavam festival is drawing large crowds, and a city-wide light show, “Illuminating Joy, Spreading Harmony,” is illuminating Thiruvananthapuram’s streets and heritage buildings.
