Fri Dec 27 19:15:30 UTC 2024: ## Auto Industry Legend Osamu Suzuki Dies at 94
**Hamamatsu, Japan** – Osamu Suzuki, the former chairman of Suzuki Motor Corp. and a pivotal figure in transforming the company into a global automotive powerhouse, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 94, the company announced Friday. The cause of death was malignant lymphoma.
Known for his down-to-earth approach and candid demeanor, Suzuki, who often referred to himself as “an old guy from a small to mid-size company,” led Suzuki Motor Corp. from 1978 to 2015. His tenure saw the company’s sales surge more than tenfold, reaching ¥3 trillion ($19 billion) in the 2000s.
A key moment in Suzuki’s leadership was the launch of an affordable minicar in 1979, a resounding success that propelled the company into international markets. He also spearheaded crucial alliances with major players like General Motors and Volkswagen, and later, a capital alliance with Toyota in 2019 to collaborate on self-driving technology.
While competitors expanded into diverse markets and vehicle segments, Suzuki focused on mini and compact cars, primarily in South and Southeast Asia, a strategy reflecting his emphasis on understanding the needs of the consumer at a grassroots level. “Making good quality and low-price products is the basis of manufacturing,” Suzuki once stated, highlighting his hands-on approach to business.
Before his career at Suzuki Motor, Suzuki, born Osamu Matsuda, worked in banking. He joined the company in 1958 after marrying into the founding family. He passed the presidency to his son, Toshihiro Suzuki, in 2015, and stepped down as chairman in 2021, remaining an advisor until his death. His legacy includes Suzuki Motor’s pioneering status as the first Japanese automaker to establish local production in India, where its vehicles enjoyed immense popularity.
