Fri Dec 27 19:09:55 UTC 2024: ## Parker Solar Probe Makes History with Closest-Ever Approach to the Sun

**Washington, D.C. –** NASA announced on Friday that its Parker Solar Probe successfully completed its closest-ever approach to the Sun, passing a mere 6.1 million kilometers (3.8 million miles) above the solar surface on December 24th. The probe, traveling at a record-breaking speed of 692 kilometers per hour (430,000 mph), penetrated the Sun’s outer atmosphere, the corona.

After a seven-day communication silence, the probe transmitted a beacon signal late Thursday, confirming its survival and operational status. “Flying this close to the Sun is a historic moment in humanity’s first mission to a star,” said Nicky Fox, head of the Science Mission Directorate at NASA headquarters.

The probe, launched in 2018, is equipped with a heat shield capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1,400 degrees Celsius (2,600 degrees Fahrenheit). It will continue orbiting the Sun at this close proximity until at least September. Detailed telemetry data is expected on January 1st.

NASA scientists emphasized the mission’s importance in furthering our understanding of the Sun, a star crucial to life on Earth. Amitabha Ghosh, a NASA scientist, highlighted the profound lack of knowledge about the Sun despite its vital role. “If the Sun was to stop shining even for a day, all life on Earth would be destroyed,” Ghosh stated. Data from the Parker Solar Probe is expected to provide crucial insights into the Sun’s heating mechanisms, heat transmission processes, and the composition of the solar wind.
