**Ciudad Juarez, Mexico** – Authorities in the Mexican state of Chihuahua have unearthed the skeletal remains of twelve individuals in eleven clandestine graves near Ascension, approximately 180 kilometers west of Ciudad Juarez. The discovery was announced Thursday by the state prosecutor’s office.
Investigations began on December 18th at a desolate site, eventually uncovering eleven shallow pits containing the remains. The bodies have been transported to state forensic laboratories for identification and to determine the cause of death.
Chihuahua, a state heavily impacted by organized crime and drug trafficking, has a long history of violence. Official figures indicate 3,927 people have gone missing in the state since 1952, adding to the national crisis of approximately 120,000 missing persons across Mexico. While families often conduct independent searches for their missing loved ones, it remains unclear if any volunteer search groups assisted authorities in this particular discovery.
