**Yakutsk, Russia** – Scientists in Siberia have announced the remarkable discovery of a remarkably well-preserved 50,000-year-old baby mammoth unearthed from thawing permafrost in the Batagaika crater. The creature, weighing over 110 kg, was found in the massive, climate-change-induced depression, which is over 80 meters deep. The mammoth’s head and trunk, usually the first parts to decompose, are exceptionally well-preserved, a rarity according to Maxim Cherpasov, head of the Lazarev Mammoth Museum Laboratory. While initial estimations suggest the mammoth was just over a year old at the time of its death, further testing will confirm its age. This discovery follows a series of other significant paleontological finds in the region, including a 32,000-year-old sabre-toothed cat cub and a 44,000-year-old wolf carcass, all unearthed from the thawing permafrost of Siberia. The findings highlight the impact of climate change and offer invaluable insights into prehistoric life.
