**KALPETTA, Kerala –** The second Wayanad Literature Festival (WLF), inaugurated Friday by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, focused on celebrating diversity and critically examining the historical narratives shaping India. The festival, organized by the Wayanad Literary Foundation, paid tribute to social reformer Basavanna, whose legacy of fighting inequality continues to inspire. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized the importance of upholding constitutional values of equality and social justice, urging participants to foster a more equitable society.
Historian John Keay highlighted the importance of William Logan’s “Malabar Manual,” emphasizing its insightful portrayal of societal dynamics beyond simple historical record-keeping. Keay criticized colonial efforts to erase Indigenous identities through renaming and rewriting history, advocating for the inclusion of marginalized voices in national narratives. He cited the renaming of Calicut to Kozhikode as an example of the need for historical revision to reflect cultural identity.
Journalist Dhirendra K. Jha, in a session titled ‘Writing the History of the Right,’ discussed the Hindu right wing’s strategic use of misinformation and propaganda to achieve legitimacy. He noted instances where even Leftist perspectives inadvertently supported right-wing narratives. Jha highlighted the need to understand the historical manipulation that contributed to Ayodhya becoming a significant political flashpoint and the conflation of patriotism with the RSS ideology. The festival featured numerous sessions exploring literature, history, and social issues.
