Fri Dec 27 03:00:00 UTC 2024: ## India’s Fish Production Soars, Extension Services Key to Future Growth
**New Delhi, December 27, 2024** – India’s fish production has reached a record 175 lakh tons in 2022-23, an 83% increase since 2013-14, solidifying its position as the world’s second-largest producer. This success, driven largely by inland fisheries (75% of total production), supports the livelihoods of approximately 30 million fishers and farmers. However, experts emphasize the crucial need to strengthen last-mile extension services to ensure continued growth and sustainability.
The government is actively addressing this through initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Samapada Yojana, which includes the establishment of Matsya Seva Kendras (MSK). These one-stop shops offer a range of services, from water quality analysis to training on sustainable practices, with 60% government assistance available for women and weaker sections. Examples of successful MSKs include centers in Thrissur (Kerala), focused on disease testing, and those in Maharashtra, providing capacity building in seed and feed technology.
A further initiative, the deployment of “Sagar Mitras” in coastal areas, acts as a vital link between the government and sea-borne fishers, providing information on catches, prices, regulations, weather, and safe handling practices.
To further enhance these services, the government is advocating for institutional convergence between existing extension services (like Krishi Vigyan Kendras) and the new initiatives. A digital push is also underway, with the launch of the AquaBazaar virtual learning platform. Furthermore, a World Bank-assisted project aims to create digital identities for all fishers and farmers, improving access to support and information.
According to Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Government of India, these combined efforts are crucial for ensuring the continued growth and sustainability of India’s thriving fisheries sector.
