**New Delhi** – A previously unknown act of integrity by the late former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has come to light. Ramu Damodaran, Private Secretary to then-Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, revealed that Dr. Singh donated a substantial sum to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) following the 1991 devaluation of the Indian rupee.
The donation stemmed from the increased rupee value of Dr. Singh’s overseas bank account, accumulated during his time working abroad. Following the government’s decision to devalue the rupee by 20 percent in July 1991, the value of his foreign savings increased significantly in rupee terms. Instead of keeping this gain, Dr. Singh reportedly presented a check for the entire amount to Mr. Damodaran, instructing him to deposit it into the PMNRF.
Mr. Damodaran, currently serving as a Permanent Observer for the University for Peace to the United Nations, recalled the incident, emphasizing that Dr. Singh acted entirely on his own volition and without fanfare. He described Dr. Singh as possessing “quite an authority about silent persona,” and noted the former Prime Minister’s quiet efficiency and respect among his peers.
The revelation highlights Dr. Singh’s commitment to public service, even in personal financial matters. The incident underscores his dedication to transparency and ethical conduct during a critical period of economic reform in India. Dr. Singh’s actions, according to Mr. Damodaran, reflect a man who prioritized national interest above personal gain.
