**Kundapur, Karnataka, December 26, 2024** – Hundreds gathered in Beejady village near Kundapur today to pay their respects to Lance Havaldar Anup Poojary, who died in a road accident in Jammu and Kashmir earlier this week. Poojary, a soldier with the 11 Maratha Light Infantry Regiment, was one of five soldiers killed when their army vehicle plunged into a gorge in Mendhar on Tuesday.
His body was flown to Mangaluru International Airport this morning, received by Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary and Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta. A large procession carrying Poojary’s remains then wound its way from Thekkatte to Kundapur and finally to Beejady, with mourners chanting patriotic slogans and paying their last respects.
The cremation ceremony, with full state and military honors, took place near his home after a poignant gathering at the Government Primary School in Beejary Padu. Poojary’s grieving mother, Chandu, wife, Manjushree, and one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Eshanvi, were among those present. Numerous dignitaries including former MP K Jayaprakash Hegde and local officials also attended the funeral.
Poojary, who had served in the Indian Army for 13 years, is survived by his wife, daughter, and two sisters. His death has sent shockwaves through the community, with locals expressing profound grief and gratitude for his service to the nation.
