**Chennai, India –** Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has returned from a UK trip to launch a dramatic protest against the ruling DMK government. Following an alleged sexual assault at Anna University, Annamalai self-flagellated six times and vowed to remain barefoot until the DMK is ousted from power. This act, described as a form of penance, aims to pressure the government into addressing the issue.
Annamalai criticized the police for releasing victim details in the FIR and questioned the lack of CCTV cameras on campus. He also shared photos of the accused with alleged links to the DMK, forcing the party to deny any connection. His actions come amidst a cooling of relations with the AIADMK, the main opposition party, which has yet to take a strong stance on the sexual assault case.
His protest has garnered attention, overshadowing the AIADMK’s response and positioning the BJP as a key player in the controversy. While some view his actions as outrageous, others see it as strengthening his image as a determined leader, particularly among religiously inclined voters. A senior RSS leader suggested the stunt, though lacking immediate electoral gains, solidifies Annamalai’s image as a “penitent warrior.” His strategy may also be a response to the rise of actor-turned-politician Vijay, who poses a threat to both the BJP and DMK. Annamalai’s conciliatory tone towards the AIADMK, however, suggests a possible future alliance remains an option.
