BULAWAYO, ZIMBABWE – Sean Williams’ magnificent unbeaten 145 and a half-century on debut from Ben Curran propelled Zimbabwe to a commanding 363/4 at the close of play on Day 1 of the first Test against Afghanistan in Bulawayo.
Zimbabwe, electing to bat first, started aggressively. Curran, the second of three cricketing brothers, blazed a quickfire 68, featuring four boundaries in a single over, before falling just before lunch. He shared a 49-run stand with Takudzwanashe Kaitano (46) and a strong opening partnership of 43.
Williams took center stage after lunch, anchoring several significant partnerships. He shared a 78-run stand with Kaitano and a 50-run partnership with Dion Myers (26). His innings was studded with powerful shots, including a six off the first ball after the break. He reached his century with a calm double and continued his assault, even surviving a controversial dismissal before returning to the crease following a no-ball.
A late flourish saw Williams and Craig Ervine (56*) put on an unbroken 143-run partnership, pushing Zimbabwe past 350.
