**London** – A new biopic, “Better Man,” will tell the story of British pop icon Robbie Williams, but with a twist: the singer will be portrayed by a CGI monkey. Director Michael Gracey, known for “The Greatest Showman,” chose this unconventional approach due to Williams’ relative lack of fame in the United States. “In America, they’re like, ‘Who’s this guy?'” Gracey explained. The film, however, will focus on Williams’ meteoric rise to fame in Britain, where he achieved 14 No. 1 singles.
The movie will chronicle Williams’ journey from his early days in the boy band Take That to his solo career, highlighting both his flamboyant stage presence and his struggles with depression and addiction. Williams himself, now 50, described “Better Man” as a “very modern musical” exploring themes of “enduring and overcoming, near death experiences, self-abuse and impostor syndrome.” While the CGI monkey portrayal is certainly unique, it promises a fresh and intriguing take on the life of a pop star whose story is largely unknown to American audiences.
