**Tokyo, Japan** – Osamu Suzuki, the frugal and visionary leader who steered Suzuki Motor Corporation for over four decades and played a pivotal role in transforming India’s automotive landscape, passed away on Christmas Day at the age of 94. The cause of death was lymphoma, the company announced.
Known for his legendary cost-cutting measures – from lowering factory ceilings to save on air conditioning to consistently flying economy class – Suzuki’s leadership transformed Suzuki Motor from a minivehicle manufacturer into a global player. His shrewd business acumen was instrumental in rescuing the company from near-collapse in the 1970s and launching the hugely successful Alto minivehicle.
Suzuki’s most significant contribution, however, was his audacious decision to invest a year’s profits into establishing a national car maker in India – a market then characterized by low sales and primarily British-made vehicles. Despite initial setbacks and rejections from major automakers, a chance encounter led to a partnership with Maruti, resulting in the launch of the hugely popular Maruti 800 in 1983. Today, Maruti Suzuki, majority-owned by Suzuki Motor, commands roughly 40% of India’s car market.
Beyond business acumen, Suzuki championed equality in the workplace, implementing open-plan offices, a single canteen, and uniform policies for all employees. While not all his ventures were successful – a high-profile partnership with Volkswagen ultimately ended in arbitration – his legacy remains firmly cemented in the global automotive industry. He stepped down as CEO in 2016 but remained chairman until 2021. His death marks the end of an era for Suzuki Motor and the broader automotive world.
