**MAPUTO, Mozambique —** Mozambique is grappling with its worst election-related violence in over three decades, leaving over 250 people dead since October’s disputed presidential election. Protests, sparked by the Constitutional Court’s December 23rd upholding of the ruling Frelimo party’s victory, have escalated into widespread unrest.
According to a civil society organization, at least 125 deaths have occurred since the court ruling, bringing the total death toll since the election to over 250. Protesters, accusing Frelimo of rigging the election, have clashed repeatedly with police and military forces. The situation has been described as a “social revolt” by human rights activist Cídia Chissungo.
The opposition’s leading candidate has rejected the election results and called for a nationwide shutdown. Violence has included widespread burning of tires, looting and vandalism of buildings, the establishment of illegal roadblocks, and mass prison breaks.
The instability in Mozambique, a strategically important port nation, carries significant regional and global implications. The country’s volatile situation raises concerns about its stability and its role in connecting southern Africa to the rest of the world.
