**CHENNAI, December 27, 2024** – The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has partnered with the Odisha government to significantly improve road safety in the state. This collaboration will utilize a data-driven approach to reduce road fatalities through evidence-based interventions.

IIT-M’s RBG Labs will implement its ‘5E model and transportation safety framework,’ focusing on engineering, education, enforcement, emergency care, and crucially, human factors. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was recently signed between the institute and Odisha’s Commerce and Transport department.

Odisha’s Commerce and Transport Minister, Bhibhuti Bhusan Jena, stated that the initiative aims to create long-term solutions for road safety challenges. IIT-M director V. Kamakoti highlighted the institute’s commitment to innovative, technology-driven solutions, noting similar successful implementations in Tamil Nadu, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

The program will include capacity-building initiatives, equipping Odisha stakeholders with skills in data collection, analysis, and the development of effective interventions. This collaboration marks a significant step towards improving road safety in Odisha using a comprehensive, data-driven strategy.
