Fri Dec 27 03:27:56 UTC 2024: ## Rachakonda Police Achieve High Conviction Rate, Highlight Challenges in Justice System

**Hyderabad, Telangana, December 27, 2024** – The Rachakonda Police Commissionerate has reported a remarkable 30 convictions this year, including 14 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, highlighting both successes and challenges in the Telangana justice system. Commissioner G. Sudheer Babu attributes the success to a dedicated Court Monitoring Cell (CMC) that meticulously tracks cases from investigation to trial, ensuring the timely presentation of evidence and witness attendance.

One high-profile case involved the rape and murder of a 55-year-old woman in Pochampally. While the accused, Mohammed Anwar, confessed, the police faced challenges in court due to the inadmissibility of confessions. However, forensic evidence, including DNA matching from a liquor bottle and vaginal swabs, provided irrefutable proof, leading to Anwar’s conviction for 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for rape and life imprisonment for murder.

The CMC’s role was crucial in several other cases. In the murder of T. Ravinder by his son, the CMC identified a missing confession statement at the last minute, preventing a potential acquittal. Another case involved the 2014 kidnapping and murder of Mohammed Ilyas Ahmed. While the accused were initially arrested and confessed, tracking them down for trial proved difficult, highlighting the challenges posed by absconding suspects. Despite these challenges, two of the four accused were brought to justice and received life sentences.

While praising the high conviction rate, especially in POCSO cases, Commissioner Babu acknowledged difficulties in securing convictions in sexual assault cases. Parents sometimes refuse to testify due to the social stigma, potentially hindering the prosecution’s efforts. In one instance, the CMC had to extensively counsel a family to ensure their participation in a case involving an eight-year-old victim.

The Rachakonda Police’s success underscores the importance of forensic science, diligent investigation, and proactive court monitoring in achieving justice. However, the challenges encountered, particularly concerning witness cooperation in sensitive cases, highlight the need for ongoing improvements in the justice system. The commissioner expressed confidence in replicating these successes in future cases.
