Thu Dec 26 16:45:41 UTC 2024: ## Chennai Police: Anna University Assault Perpetrated by Lone Accused

**Chennai, December 26, 2024** – Chennai City Police Commissioner A. Arun today clarified that the sexual assault on an Anna University student was committed by the sole accused, Gnanasekaran, arrested on Wednesday. Contrary to initial reports suggesting involvement of others, Mr. Arun stated that Gnanasekaran acted alone, his phone being on airplane mode throughout the incident. Rumors of a second individual present, or a phone call to a “sir,” have been dismissed as untrue.

A separate investigation is underway regarding the leak of the First Information Report (FIR) onto social media. Commissioner Arun confirmed a case has been registered at the Kotturpuram police station and that the perpetrator will be arrested upon identification. He speculated the leak originated either from unauthorized access to the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network Systems (CCTNS) portal or from the complainant. He emphatically denied any internal police involvement.

The accused, Gnanasekaran, faces a total of 26 pending cases, including 20 in Chennai and six in neighboring districts. Notably, all Chennai cases (2013-2020) involved only property disputes and petty crimes; no prior sexual assault charges were registered against him. The Kotturpuram police have added three additional sections to the charges, including violations of the Information Technology Act, to the initial three under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police praise their swift response in apprehending the suspect.
