Fri Dec 27 16:45:44 UTC 2024: ## Tamil Nadu Minister Criticizes Annamalai’s Self-Flagellation Protest
**Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu:** Tamil Nadu Law Minister S. Regupathi has criticized BJP state president K. Annamalai’s recent self-flagellation protest following the alleged sexual assault of a Anna University student. Annamalai’s protest, which involved beating himself with a whip, has sparked widespread debate.
Minister Regupathi stated that self-flagellation is neither a justifiable punishment nor a means of atonement. He questioned whether Annamalai’s actions were an attempt at self-punishment for perceived failures or a symbolic act of atonement. The minister further asserted that the DMK government had done nothing to warrant such a protest.
The minister also addressed the ongoing investigation into the alleged assault, stating that the accused, Gnanasekaran, has no connection with the DMK party. He confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the circumstances of the crime, including an examination of CCTV footage from the sprawling 250-acre Anna University campus. The minister added that Gnanasekaran’s prior criminal record only recently came to light.
Regupathi further emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring justice and that the police are investigating thoroughly. He highlighted the stringent laws in place to deal with sexual offenses and the high conviction rate in such cases in Tamil Nadu. He also touched upon security measures on the campus, stating that enhanced security measures will be implemented following this incident. The minister also dismissed suggestions that the FIR copy, which allegedly contained inappropriate language, was leaked by police, suggesting alternative means of its release.
