Thu Dec 26 15:11:05 UTC 2024: ## Kohli Fined, Receives Demerit Point for On-Field Incident

**Melbourne, Australia:** Former India captain Virat Kohli has been fined 20% of his match fee and handed one demerit point for a shoulder-to-shoulder collision with Australian debutant Sam Konstas during the fourth Test match in Melbourne. The incident, which occurred during a change of ends after the tenth over of Australia’s innings, involved a brief but heated exchange between the two players.

While both players acknowledged the contact, accounts differed on the intent. Konstas, who went on to score a half-century on debut, described the incident as accidental, stating that the “emotions got to both of us.” However, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting viewed the incident differently, suggesting Kohli instigated the confrontation by encroaching on Konstas’ space.

The on-field umpires, along with the third and fourth umpires, reviewed the incident and charged Kohli with a Level 1 offence under the ICC Code of Conduct, which prohibits inappropriate physical contact. Kohli accepted the sanctions proposed by Match Referee Andy Pycroft, avoiding a formal hearing. The penalty falls short of a suspension, which would have resulted from a Level 2 offence.

The incident sparked debate amongst commentators, with some predicting a more severe punishment for Kohli. Despite the differing opinions on who was at fault, the ICC’s ruling has brought a swift conclusion to the matter.
