**PHANG NGA, THAILAND/BANDA ACEH, INDONESIA/GALLE, SRI LANKA —** Southeast and South Asia observed a somber 20th anniversary of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami on Thursday. The tsunami, triggered by a 9.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Indonesia, claimed an estimated 230,000 lives across eleven countries. Memorial services and remembrance ceremonies were held throughout the affected regions.
In Indonesia, where over half the deaths occurred, hundreds gathered at a mass grave in Ulee Lheue village, scattering flowers and mourning the loss of loved ones, many of whom remain unidentified. Nurkhalis, 52, who lost his entire immediate family, recounted the enduring pain of the anniversary. A memorial service was also held at Aceh’s Grand Baiturrahman Mosque.
Sri Lanka held a two-minute silence at the Peraliya Tsunami Memorial Statue in Galle. In India’s Tamil Nadu, the hardest-hit state, residents lit candles and offered prayers. Thailand’s Phang Nga province, also severely impacted, saw religious rites and visits to the Tsunami Wall memorial. Urai Sirisuk, who lost her four-year-old daughter, recounted her lasting trauma and inability to return to the sea. Phang Nga province alone lost 5,400 lives, including many foreign tourists.
The ceremonies served as a poignant reminder of the scale of the tragedy and the enduring grief felt by those who lost family and friends two decades ago.
