Thu Dec 26 16:28:19 UTC 2024: ## Guardian Announces Best Men’s Test XI of the Year

**London** – The Guardian newspaper has revealed its prestigious annual men’s Test XI, selected by a panel of 13 cricket experts. The team, representing the best performances over the past 12 months, features a surprising number of English players, despite no single team dominating the international circuit.

Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was the unanimous choice, earning 13 out of 13 votes. His impressive 1,312 runs at an average of 52, including back-to-back double centuries and more sixes than Virat Kohli has hit in 12 years, solidified his place.

England’s Joe Root also earned high praise, receiving 12 votes. His six centuries across four countries cemented his reputation as one of the world’s best batsmen. Harry Brook, with 11 votes, impressed with four centuries, including a triple century – the first by an Englishman in over 30 years. England’s Alex Duckett, despite a slightly inconsistent average, also secured a spot.

Other notable selections include Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis (8 votes), renowned for his batting prowess and dual spin bowling; Australia’s Travis Head (6 votes), known for his explosive, if inconsistent, batting; and South Africa’s Kyle Verreynne (4 votes), a key player in the Proteas’ resurgence.

The bowling attack is equally formidable, featuring India’s Ravindra Jadeja (6 votes), known for his all-round capabilities; England’s Matthew Atkinson (8 votes), a breakout star with 50 Test wickets and a hat-trick; and New Zealand’s Matt Henry (7 votes), who excelled against Australia and India. Rounding out the team is India’s Jasprit Bumrah (12 votes), widely considered the world’s leading bowler, who consistently troubled batsmen throughout the year.

The selection process, detailed in The Guardian’s weekly cricket email, “The Spin,” highlights the diversity of talent and the competitiveness of international cricket in the past year.
