**Tiruchi, December 26, 2024** – A 142-year-old commemorative stone plaque, demolished in July from a Tiruchi court premises, will be preserved at the District Museum, following intervention by the Chief Minister.

The plaque, honoring Bishop Reginald Heber D.D. for his contributions to Tiruchi’s education system, was destroyed despite its historical significance. The Salem Historical Society condemned the demolition, calling it an act of apathy by government officials. In a letter to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, the Society’s general secretary, J. Barnabas, highlighted the Bishop’s role in developing Tiruchi as an educational hub and criticized the lack of respect shown to his legacy.

Following the Society’s complaint, the Principal Secretary and Commissioner of the Archaeology Department ordered an inspection. The subsequent report confirmed the plaque’s historical importance and recommended its preservation in the museum. Mr. Barnabas expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for the swift action taken to protect the artifact.
