**BROWNSVILLE, TX –** Elon Musk is taking his ambition to new heights, quite literally. Following SpaceX’s relocation of its headquarters from Hawthorne, California to Starbase, Texas in July 2024, citing objections to California legislation, Musk is now spearheading efforts to establish Starbase as its own incorporated municipality.
The move, announced after a California law requiring schools to inform parents about their children’s chosen names and pronouns became the “final straw” for Musk, is rapidly gaining momentum. Around 500 residents, primarily SpaceX employees and their families, are driving the initiative, having begun circulating a petition earlier this month to hold an election on the matter. The proposed city, encompassing 1.5 square miles, is nearly complete and would house approximately 219 primary residents and 100 children, many of whom currently reside in rentals.
The incorporation process, according to experts, would give Musk significant local control over the development of the area. SpaceX general manager, Kathryn Lueders, argues that incorporating Starbase will streamline infrastructure development, making it a “world-class place to live” for current and future employees contributing to humanity’s space exploration endeavors.
However, the ambitious project is not without its opponents. Earlier this year, the group “Save RGV” filed suit against SpaceX, alleging environmental violations. This legal challenge, alongside concerns about the potential impact on existing local infrastructure, represents a potential hurdle in the path of Starbase’s incorporation.
Despite the opposition, SpaceX security manager Gunnar Milburn is slated to become the inaugural mayor if the incorporation effort succeeds. If the petition receives sufficient support and the election results are favorable, Musk will have achieved another landmark feat: creating his own company town, a uniquely audacious chapter in the ever-expanding Musk empire. The official announcement that SpaceX’s HQ would be in the city of Starbase, Texas came in December 2024.
