**London** – Christopher Nolan, fresh off his Oscar wins for *Oppenheimer*, will embark on a new cinematic adventure. Universal Pictures announced Monday that the acclaimed director will helm an adaptation of Homer’s *The Odyssey*, slated for release on July 17, 2026.
The film, described as a “mythic action epic,” will be shot globally using IMAX film technology, marking the first time Homer’s classic tale will grace IMAX screens. A stellar cast is set to bring the ancient Greek saga to life, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron.
This represents a departure from Nolan’s previous work, which has largely focused on historical dramas (*Oppenheimer*, *Dunkirk*) and mind-bending thrillers (*Inception*, *Memento*). While *The Odyssey* introduces a fantastical element, Nolan’s track record of blending realism with larger-than-life concepts suggests a unique approach to the epic poem’s gods, goddesses, and monsters.
The story of Odysseus’ long journey home after the Trojan War has seen numerous adaptations, including the 1954 film *Ulysses* starring Kirk Douglas. Interestingly, Nolan was reportedly considered to direct the 2004 film *Troy*, before helming *Batman Begins*. This new adaptation promises a fresh interpretation of a timeless classic, further solidifying Nolan’s position as one of cinema’s most visionary directors. The announcement comes on the heels of Nolan receiving a knighthood from King Charles III last week.
