Thu Dec 26 01:02:52 UTC 2024: ## Young Gun Konstas to Rescue Australia’s Failing Opening Batting

**Melbourne, Australia – December 25, 2024** – Australia is pinning its hopes on 19-year-old Sam Konstas to solve its crippling opening batting crisis ahead of the Boxing Day Test against India. The team’s recent struggles, highlighted by a paltry 99 runs scored by the opening pair of Nathan McSweeney and Usman Khawaja in six innings, have left Australia with its lowest opening wicket average (24.57) since 1996.

Konstas, who boasts a First-Class average of 42 including two centuries, will partner with Khawaja. This marks Australia’s third opening combination since David Warner’s retirement in January. The team’s opening woes are a stark contrast to the 39-run average achieved by Warner and Khawaja in their 41 innings together.

While Australia’s openers have spent considerable time at the crease in 2024 (averaging 53 deliveries before the first wicket), this hasn’t translated into runs, forcing the middle order to consistently bail them out. This contrasts sharply with India’s opening partnership, which averages nearly 38 despite facing a similar number of deliveries.

The problem, analysts suggest, is Australia’s tendency to change opening partnerships frequently. Since the start of the World Test Championship in 2019, Australia has used 12 opening batsmen, compared to four each for rivals India and England. High-profile failures like Will Pucovski and domestic players Marcus Harris and Joe Burns have contributed to the instability.

Konstas, however, represents a glimmer of hope. His recent Sheffield Shield performance, including becoming the youngest to score two centuries in a match since Ricky Ponting, has earned him a spot in the Boxing Day Test. Whether Konstas can finally end Australia’s opening batting woes remains to be seen.
