Thu Dec 26 01:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Renowned Malayalam Writer and Filmmaker M.T. Vasudevan Nair Passes Away

**Kozhikode, December 26, 2024** – M.T. Vasudevan Nair, a literary giant and celebrated filmmaker of Malayalam cinema, passed away at a private hospital in Kozhikode last night around 10 pm. He was 90. His body was taken to his residence, ‘Sithara’, following his death.

Nair, whose contributions spanned novels, short stories, screenplays, plays, children’s literature, travelogues, and essays, was a towering figure in Malayalam literature, elevating it to international recognition. He also served as a newspaper editor. He directed six feature films, including the classic *Nirmalyam*, and two documentaries.

A two-day state mourning has been declared by the Kerala government, on December 26th and 27th, to honor his legacy. His funeral will be held at 5 pm today at the Mavur public crematorium. As per his wishes, a public viewing will not be held.

Nair’s health had deteriorated after he was admitted to the hospital on December 16th due to increased respiratory issues and congestion. His condition worsened yesterday evening. Prominent figures from the film industry and politics paid their respects. Actor Mohanlal, who visited Nair’s residence, recalled the numerous memorable roles Nair had written for him, highlighting their long association. Director Hariharan, who worked with Nair on several films, was visibly emotional upon seeing his body.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described Nair’s death as a profound loss, stating that Kerala has lost a literary genius who placed Malayalam literature on the world stage. Nair received numerous awards throughout his illustrious career, including the Padma Bhushan (2005), Jnanpith Award, Ezhuthachan Award, Vayalar Award, and numerous state and national film awards. He is survived by his wife, Kalamandalam Saraswati, and daughters, Sithara and Ashwati.
