**Kolkata, India** – The parents of a 31-year-old doctor, who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August, have approached the Calcutta High Court, expressing deep dissatisfaction with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation. The case, which sparked nationwide outrage, has seen the arrest of civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, but the parents allege a flawed and incomplete investigation.
The petition, filed before Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, claims the CBI has failed to question key witnesses present on the night of the murder and has focused solely on Roy, overlooking other potential suspects. The parents argue that the post-mortem report itself suggests more than one perpetrator was involved. They specifically point to the lack of charges against Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of the medical college, and Abhijeet Mondal, the officer-in-charge of the local police station, both of whom were granted bail after the CBI failed to file a chargesheet within the stipulated 90 days.
While the trial court is proceeding expeditiously under Supreme Court directives, the parents contend that the compromised investigation jeopardizes a just outcome. They fear that without further investigation, other suspects will remain unpunished, leaving them without recourse once the trial concludes.
Justice Ghosh noted that the matter is currently before the Supreme Court and adjourned the hearing until around January 15th, pending clarity on the Supreme Court’s involvement in overseeing the probe. The brutal murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor on August 9th ignited widespread concern about workplace safety for women in India and the need for stronger protections for healthcare professionals.
