**MUMBAI, INDIA** – Renowned Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal, a pioneer of the 1970s new wave cinema movement, passed away Monday at the age of 90 due to chronic kidney disease. His death marks a significant loss for Indian cinema, where he is celebrated for his socially conscious films and his mentorship of numerous prominent actors.
Benegal, who passed away at Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital, is credited with revolutionizing Indian filmmaking. Notable films include *Ankur* (1974), *Nishant* (1975), *Manthan* (1976), and *Bhumika* (1977), which are considered cornerstones of parallel cinema. Tributes poured in from across India’s film industry and beyond. Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt lauded Benegal’s authentic storytelling, while actor Manoj Bajpayee called him a visionary. Naseeruddin Shah, one of the many actors mentored by Benegal, described him as a foster father. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences, acknowledging Benegal’s profound impact on Indian cinema.
