**Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir –** Five Indian Army soldiers were killed and five others injured Tuesday when an army truck carrying them veered off a road and plunged into a 300-foot gorge in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. The accident occurred around 5:20 pm in the Gharoa area as a convoy of six army vehicles was traveling to Banoi.
The Indian Army’s 16 Corps confirmed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), expressing condolences for the loss. A defense spokesperson stated that an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway, but preliminary findings suggest the driver may have lost control of the vehicle on a curve. The Army has ruled out any terrorist involvement.
Rescue teams from the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police are currently at the scene.
The tragic news prompted condolences from several prominent figures, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who offered their deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery for the injured soldiers.
